Abdul Malik Bin Abul KassimPENANG STATE MINISTER
Abdul Malik Kassim age 58, born in Penang, graduated in Public Administration from Mara Institute of Technology, has had extensive experience in various level of Business Management from Managing small and Medium scale companies to a Multi-National Electronic company. He started his 30 over years of career with a Multi-National Japanese Chemical company and there-after managed a member of companies including Housing Development, Construction, Construction Material Trading, Electrical Engineering, Food Packing, Multi-National Electronics Co and Travel & Tours.
He has also had the opportunity to hold Senior Technical Management position in 2 International Engineering & Construction Companies, Christiani & Nielson UK and Boskalis International Dutch for 2 projects in Ports and Submarine Engineering works.
His International exposure in the Middle East started with his engagement in Saudi in 1998 for a year as a Business Development Manager with a Saudi-Malaysian Company in Jeddah and Makkah. He was involved in a number of International Business Development Projects in Middle East mainly in Saudi before being elected as a member of Penang State Legislative Assembly and appointed State Minister for Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs after the last general election in March 2008.
With his wide experience and background, Abd Malik was entrusted by the Chief Minister of Penang to drive the development of the State’s Penang International Halal Hub initiative. He currently leads as the Chairman of the Penang International Halal Hub Taskforce, and oversees the running of nine Halal Steering committees that focus on developing and implementing the sectoral strategies for the Halal industries and services. He is also the Chairman of the Penang International Halal Hub Development the state arm for development and promotion of halal initiatives in Penang.
Under his leadership, Halal Penang has strived to facilitate, develop and promote the halal industry in Penang. Since establishment in April 2009, he has led the initiative of garnering foreign direct investment in to the Penang Halal Industrial Park amounting to more than 484 million in investment value.
He was also responsible in the rebranding of Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department to the Halal Management Division Unit handling halal certification applications, procedures and inspection resulting in a tremendous leap from a number of 55 halal certified companies (2008) up to 498 companies (as at December 2012); an increment of 805%.
His supervision has witnessed the Halal Mangement Unit outreached and certified foreign industry players in the Henan Province of China, Bangladesh and Belgium.Halal Penang is also acknowledged by international halal players, when he was given the chance to present and speak at the international platform.
He was honored and invited to speak at international conferences such the “Global Halal Congress 2010 in Pakistan”, “The Halal Industry and Halal Services Conference 2011 in Kuwait”, WHASIB-Phuket 2010, Thailand, “International Conference and Expo on Halal Industry”, Pakistan and “The First International Conference on Halal Food Control & Exhibition (ICHFCE), Riyadh and during “The World Halal Forum’ in 2012 at the Westminster University, London and many other local and foreign forums.
This recognition is at par with other panel professional speakers which mainly comprises of foreign ministers
